Why Cape Coast Belongs on Your Travel List
Cape Coast sits about three hours west of Accra along Ghana's Atlantic coastline, making it an ideal day trip or overnight destination. It is one of those rare places that manages to be historically significant, naturally beautiful, and genuinely joyful all at once. The city itself is vibrant and lived-in, the food is extraordinary, and the people are among the warmest you will encounter anywhere in the world.
Top Things to Do in Cape Coast
Tour Cape Coast Castle No visit to Cape Coast is complete without this. Cape Coast Castle is one of the most important and sobering sites on the African continent — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest slave-holding facilities built along the West African coast. Dozens of ancient castles and forts dot Ghana's coastline, each one marking the final point of departure for enslaved Africans before the brutal passage across the Atlantic.
Before the tour begins, a thoughtfully curated exhibition of photographs, diagrams, and historical timelines provides essential context for what you are about to experience. The tour itself takes you through the castle's time-worn corridors, dungeons, and the infamous "Door of No Return." It is a heavy and necessary experience — one that stays with you long after you leave.
After visiting Cape Coast Castle, the nearby Elmina Castle is equally worth your time. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, it is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa and offers another layer of historical understanding.
Walk the Canopy at Kakum National Park A short drive from the town center, Kakum National Park is one of Ghana's great natural treasures. Dense tropical rainforest, extraordinary biodiversity, and the sounds of the jungle at full volume surround you from the moment you arrive.
The park's signature experience is its canopy walkway — a series of suspended bridges hanging 100 feet above the forest floor, offering a breathtaking bird's eye view of the rainforest canopy below. It is thrilling, beautiful, and completely unlike anything most travelers have experienced. After the walkway, shorter hiking trails wind through the forest floor for those who want to go deeper into the park.
Spend a Day on the Beach Cape Coast is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Ghana. Golden sand, warm gentle waves, and tree-lined shores make for a beach experience that feels a world away from the crowds of more commercial destinations.
The Oasis Beach Resort, just moments from Cape Coast Castle, is a local favorite — excellent Ghanaian food, fresh beverages, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to lose an entire afternoon. There are several similar resorts along the coast, most of them small, locally owned, and deeply charming.
Eat Well Cape Coast is known throughout Ghana for its food, particularly its seafood. Fante kenkey with fried fish and pepper sauce is the local specialty and should be your first meal. Fresh grilled tilapia, jollof rice, and kelewele (spiced fried plantain) are equally essential. Eat at the beach resorts, at the local chop bars, and wherever smells good. You will not be disappointed.
Where to Stay
For most travelers, Accra serves as the base with Cape Coast as a day trip. However, staying overnight in Cape Coast unlocks a quieter, more immersive experience. Boutique guesthouses and small beach resorts cluster around the castle and along the coastline. Elmina , the neighboring town, also offers charming accommodation options with its own fishing harbor and historic atmosphere.
What to Pack
Ghana's coast is warm, golden, and beautiful year-round. The light here is extraordinary, particularly in the late afternoon when it catches the Atlantic and turns everything to amber.
Pack the Sandra Monokini in Cape Coast — our warm, sun-drenched colorway drawn directly from the rich golden hues of this coastline. Whether you are spending the afternoon at Oasis Beach Resort or exploring the shore after a day at the castle, the Cape Coast colorway was designed with exactly this landscape in mind.

Getting There
Fly into Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra, which receives direct flights from major hubs including London Heathrow, Amsterdam, New York JFK, and Washington Dulles. From Accra, Cape Coast is approximately a three-hour drive west along the coastal highway. Private car hire and shared tro-tros (minibuses) both make the journey regularly.
Cape Coast asks something of you. It asks you to sit with history, to walk through it, and to carry it forward. And then it takes you to the beach and feeds you the best fish you have ever eaten. That is Ghana. That is Cape Coast.
