So, while most will head to Rio de Janeiro and its popular Copacabana Beach, consider traveling to Bahia and its explosive capital, Salvador to indulge in the vibrant culture.
There are a lot of places you can explore in Bahia. The Islands of Baia de Todos os Santos, Salvador and the Historic Pelourinho, Candomblé and Cachoeira are some of the best places you can explore there.
Baia de Todos os Santos or All Saints’ Bay locates Salvador. This beautiful escape is inhabited by more than 50 small islands, ideal for quick beach getaways. A boat from the Maritimo de São Joaquim Terminal will let you travel to two of the most famous islands, Frades and Itaparica. The perfect perch along the shore at Frades near one of the caipirinhas serving huts and fresh seafood will give you the ultimate taste. You may bathe here or on Itaparica, in the dry, cool water of the bay.
Salvador has a mesmerizing combination of predominantly African and some European cultures which is found in the music, culture and dance. The cobblestone avenues, woven between pastel-colored buildings with wrought-iron balconies, shows the history of Salvador as Brazil’s first colonial city of Portugal.
About 70 miles inland, away from the coast, lies Cachoeira. An old, picturesque colonial village surrounded by plantations of tobacco and sugarcane, where the slaves of Brazil once worked the land and their religion, Candomblé flourished. Slaves paired their gods and goddesses, known as orishas, with Catholic saints in an attempt to maintain their West African Yoruba rituals, seeing similarities between St. George and their god of war, Ogun.
