3 Types of Caribbean Carnival Events and What To Expect

Going to carnival for the very first time? There are so many different types of fetes, some people call them parties but each has their own social norms. Here we’re going to break down 3 types of caribbean carnival events and what to expect ESPECIALLY if you’re new to carnival.

All Inclusive

All inclusive fetes literally means your ticket price is inclusive of drinks and food and will usually cost more than most other types of fetes.  An all inclusive is like a swanky breakfast party or a day event that starts from early afternoon all the way into the wee hours of the night. You can also have all inclusive boat rides; it really just depends on the promoter.

The biggest benefit of this type of event is that you pay your money up front in the ticket price for all of the amenities offered – there’s no paying at bars or food vendors which makes for a more seamless experience. Also, all inclusive events usually has an extensive food menu across a variety of cuisines. In addition, most all inclusive fetes have live artist and band performances, really great DJ’s and specific vendor tents (i.e. Johnny Walker, Hennessy). Expect a price point of $100 USD and greater for an all inclusive fete in many of the Caribbean carnival markets.

Cooler Fete

Cooler fetes are the opposite of all inclusives in every way. For a fraction of the cost, you can enjoy a fun, energic, light hearted event with your own beverages. It is traditional to bring a cooler filled with premium spirits, juices, and ice to be shared with your cooler crew. The event promoter will usually provide souvenir cups and these days, you can expect to be served very light snacks. It is important to note the theme of the cooler fete as they sometimes include water, foam, or paint. Whether wet or dry, this type of event is sure to be high on your list of favorites for carnival.

In terms of the cooler itself, we’ve seen patrons bring cooler bags, canteens, full on coolers and even disposable coolers to cooler fetes so do whatever is best for you and your crew. You do not have to wait on the bar! You control what and how much you drink and can ensure that your drink of choice is readily available- just remember to drink responsibly.

Boat Rides

Boat rides are a GREAT time; make sure to incorporate this type of Caribbean carnival event into your carnival itinerary. There are different types of boat rides for many different moods from raft ups (multiple yachts sailing simultaneously) to cooler cruises (BYOB), prosecco/champagne cruises, j’ouvert cruises on a barge – it really just depends on what you want to do. Attire for women mostly include swimwear and resort wear. Opt for a swimsuit only (we’d recommend one of our stylish onepieces) or pair your swimsuit with shorts, kimonos, georgette shirts, silk or beaded dresses (we at Chéri House can literally recommend swimwear outfits for days). Pro Tip: DO NOT arrive at the marina late, the boat will leave you. If you happen to miss the boat, a nearby fisherman may be willing to give you a lift. Most boat rides will dock at a beach or a spot ideal for swimming so you can enjoy the water during the event. Make sure you include a boat ride for your first or next carnival.
